ATV Rental vs Guided ATV Tour: What You Can Book

4x4 ATV Adventure with Tequila Tasting and Mexican Buffet Lunch
Quick answer:

Almost every ATV option you can book online is a guided tour, because tour booking sites sell tours, not vehicle rentals. An unguided quad rental is a different product: a road-registered vehicle rented locally, for which you need the licence the local law asks for, for example a category B licence from age 18 for motor quadricycles in Spain. If you want trails, sand or mud, a guided ATV tour is the simpler choice, such as the 4x4 ATV Adventure with Tequila Tasting and Mexican Buffet Lunch in Mexico, from $75 with a 4.93/5 rating across 5,510 reviews.

  • Tour booking sites sell tours, so none of the 178 quad, buggy and jeep listings we track is an unescorted rental.
  • Unguided rental means a road-registered quad and the right licence: in Spain AM from 15 for light quadricycles or B from 18, in Portugal B1 from 16 or B from 18.
  • Off-road driving is illegal in Iceland, with fines or imprisonment, so a rented quad could not leave roads or tracks there.
  • Guided ATV-only tours start from $18, with a median of $85 across 59 listings captured June to September 2026.
  • We do not quote rental prices because we do not track rental shops.

Searches for "ATV rental near me", "quad rental" or "rent quads" usually come from travelers who picture a shop handing over keys and a map. The quads you can reserve from home on tour booking sites are sold as guided tours. Renting a quad without a guide is a separate deal with a local shop, and it comes with the licence rules of the country you are in.

This guide explains the difference honestly. It covers when an unguided rental is possible, which licence rules apply in the countries where we found an official source, what guided tours cost in the 18 countries we track, and how to pick a guided ATV tour that comes closest to riding on your own.

How we built this guide

We reviewed the 178 ATV, quad, buggy, UTV and jeep listings we track across 18 countries, captured from Viator between June and September 2026, plus wider captures of Punta Cana and Iceland listings on October 3, 2026. We compared prices, ratings, review counts and durations, and say which capture each figure comes from. Licence and age rules come only from official sources (national traffic authorities, government agencies and legal texts), linked where they appear. Where we could not find a primary source for a country, we left that country out instead of guessing. We do not quote rental prices because we do not track rental shops, and invented figures would mislead you.

Why the ATV options you find online are guided tours

None of the 178 quad, buggy and jeep listings we track is an unescorted rental, and that is expected: the booking platform they come from sells tours and activities, not vehicle rentals. Beyond that, three practical points explain why off-road riding comes as a guided product.

  • Off-road routes need access. A tour runs on the route its operator has chosen and organised. A rented quad can only go where the law and the rental contract allow, so check the contract before assuming trails or beaches are included.
  • Some countries ban off-road driving outright. Iceland's Environment Agency states that driving off a recognised road or track is illegal and that drivers face fines or imprisonment (Environment Agency of Iceland, off-road driving leaflet). A rented quad in Iceland could only use roads and tracks, which is not what most people picture.
  • ATVs are not road vehicles by design. In a 2020 safety notice, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission states that off-road vehicles are designed to be driven only on off-road terrain, not paved surfaces (CPSC safety notice, 2020).

When an unguided ATV rental is actually possible

An unguided quad rental makes sense when three things line up. The quad is registered for public roads, you hold the licence category the local law requires for that vehicle, and the contract says where you may take it. In that case you are renting a small road vehicle, much like a scooter, and you ride it on public roads under normal traffic rules.

Before you count on leaving the road, check whether the rental contract allows trails or beaches at all. In a country like Iceland the law forbids it. If your goal is mud, sand or mountain tracks, a guided ATV tour is the straightforward way to get there.

Licence and age rules, only where we found an official source

Spain

Spain's driver regulation (Real Decreto 818/2009, article 4) sets two levels. The AM licence, from age 15, covers light quadricycles. Motor quadricycles require a category B licence, from age 18 (BOE, Reglamento General de Conductores). Check which category the quad you rent belongs to before you sign.

Portugal

Portugal's transport authority IMT lists category B1, restricted to quadricycles, from age 16, and category B from age 18 (IMT, driving licences for light vehicles and quadricycles). The B1 is a separate licence obtained through a Portuguese driving school, so for most visitors the relevant one is their category B car licence.

Iceland

Off-road driving, meaning leaving a recognised road or track, is illegal, with fines or imprisonment (Environment Agency of Iceland). ATV listings in Iceland also require the driver to hold a driving licence. See our guide to ATV tours in Iceland.

United States

Rules on road use change by state, so we do not summarise them. At federal level, a 2020 CPSC safety notice advises that riders younger than 16 should drive only age-appropriate youth ATVs, never adult ATVs, and that riders should never carry more passengers than there are seats (CPSC).

What a guided ATV tour costs by country

Per-person "from" prices. Rows come from our catalog captured June to September 2026, except Iceland, which uses the 15 listings captured on October 3, 2026. Prices can change.

For ATV-only tours across the 18 countries, the median is $85 over 59 listings, starting from $18. A wider capture of 15 Punta Cana listings on October 3, 2026 starts from $21, lower than the $33 in the catalog. Before you book

  • Decide what you want. Roads and freedom point to a rental with the right licence. Trails, sand and mud point to a guided ATV tour.
  • Bring your driving licence. Many operators require it for the driver, even on private land.
  • Read the listing for single or double ride. Some tours price two people per quad, with a supplement to ride alone.
  • Check the minimum age for drivers and passengers in the listing, and follow the CPSC advice on youth ATVs for under-16s.
  • Read our ATV safety tips and what to wear on an ATV tour.
  • Not sure about the vehicle type? Our ATV vs quad vs UTV guide explains the difference.

FAQ

Can you rent an ATV without a guide in a tourist destination?

Not through tour booking sites, which sell tours: none of the 178 quad, buggy and jeep listings we track is an unescorted rental. Unguided rentals exist for road-registered quads rented locally, where you need the licence local law requires, such as category B from age 18 for motor quadricycles in Spain.

What licence do you need to rent a quad in Spain?

Under Real Decreto 818/2009, light quadricycles need an AM licence (from age 15) and motor quadricycles need a category B licence (from age 18). Ask the rental shop which category its quad is.

What licence do you need to drive a quad in Portugal?

Portugal's IMT lists category B1, restricted to quadricycles, from age 16, and category B from age 18. Visitors usually rely on their category B car licence.

Can you rent an ATV and ride off-road in Iceland?

No. Iceland's Environment Agency states that leaving a recognised road or track is illegal, with fines or imprisonment. Guided ATV tours in Iceland start from $135 in the 15 listings captured on October 3, 2026.

How much does a guided ATV tour cost compared with an ATV rental?

Guided ATV-only tours start from $18 per person, with a median of $85 across 59 listings captured June to September 2026. We do not track rental shops, so we do not quote rental prices. Compare the rental contract, deposit and insurance terms directly.

Can children drive on an ATV tour?

It depends on the operator. The CPSC advises that riders under 16 should only drive youth ATVs, never adult ones. In Iceland, the Volcano ATV Tour lets passengers ride from age 6 while the driver must hold a licence.

Why is almost every ATV rental you find online for Punta Cana or Cozumel a guided tour?

Because tour booking sites list tours, which bundle guide, quad and transport. In our June to September 2026 catalog the 10 Dominican Republic listings run from $33 to $179 per person. A wider capture of 15 Punta Cana listings on October 3, 2026 starts from $21.
